Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

MTD for Income Tax became mandatory from 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income (gross self-employment plus property income) over £50,000, based on the 2024/25 return. It extends to those over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028. Partnerships are not yet in scope.

Quarter (standard)Update due
6 April to 5 July7 August
6 July to 5 October7 November
6 October to 5 January7 February
6 January to 5 April7 May
Final declaration31 January after the tax year

Late quarterly updates attract penalty points; reaching four points triggers a £200 penalty. The traditional Self Assessment deadlines still matter too: register by 5 October after your first tax year, file online and pay the balance by 31 January, with payments on account due 31 January and 31 July. How it works

  1. Free initial chat. We talk about your income sources, property, current records and whether MTD applies to you now or soon.
  2. Gather records. You send bank statements, invoices, agent statements, receipts and letting agent reports, in whatever form you have them.
  3. Set up. We organise your records and, where needed, set up MTD-compatible software with sensible categories.
  4. Regular updates. We keep your records current and prepare each quarterly update, checking figures with you before anything is submitted.
  5. Handover to your accountant. After the tax year we provide a full summary so your accountant can complete the final declaration or tax return.

Frequently asked questions

Do you complete and file my tax return?

We prepare your records and quarterly figures. Your accountant gives tax advice and completes and submits the final return. If you need an accountant, we can recommend Goldwins Ltd.

Does MTD for Income Tax apply to me?

It depends on your combined gross self-employment and property income. From April 2026 the threshold is over £50,000, falling to £30,000 in 2027 and £20,000 in 2028. We can help you check.

I am paid through an agent. What records do I need?

Keep every agent statement showing the gross fee, commission, VAT and any expenses deducted. We record the gross income and the commission separately so your figures are complete.

How long must I keep my records?

Generally at least five years after the 31 January submission deadline for the relevant tax year. Records can be kept digitally.
